this weekend: celia and the seven drag-nuns

If you saw an Asian guy running around downtown dressed in a nun's outfit a couple weekends ago (he was at Sh*ts & Giggles and The Hideaway), you weren't seeing things, that was my Cousin Angel visiting from Chicago. He was in town to promote his show, Nunsense II: The Second Coming (where the sisters are brothers), which is playing this weekend at the Metropolitan Church in the Valley. Cousin Angel just arrived this morning to do more advance promotion and help me prep for the arrival of the cast. Did I mention that all seven of them are staying at our loft this weekend?

Cousin Angel is such a hoot, I can only imagine what six more drag-nuns for an entire weekend will be like. If you're going to be in WeHo, they're also performing a few songs at The Abbey on Saturday afternoon. I'm going to Saturday night's show, anybody else in?

"whoa, i'm surfing"

I blogged about it back in April, but that was in New York. Now the madness has spread to Los Angeles, specifically, downtown Los Angeles at 5th and Spring. I can't believe our luck, but Point Break LIVE!, the absurdist stage adaptation of the 1991 Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze extreme-sports blockbuster, Point Break, will be playing every Friday and Saturday night this month at Charlie O's in the Alexandria Hotel. And I've got a pair of tickets to give away for this Saturday's performance.

I mentioned in my earlier post that... well, they said it best:

Best of all, each night the starring role of Keanu will be played by a lucky individual selected from the audience. In a method that captures the raw essence of a classic Keanu Reeves performance, the lead will read all his/her lines off of cue-cards held by a diligent PA. The play will be filmed via the "Keanu Kam," and at the end of the night, the "volunteer Keanu" will receive a VHS tape of his/her performance!

After sold-out, extended runs in Seattle, Minneapolis, Brooklyn and Manhattan, Point Break LIVE! finally returns to its roots: Los Angeles, the “bank robbery capital of the world” where “the air got dirty, and the sex got clean.”

tribulations, trojan women, and the hockey puck

Nic Cha Kim is one busy guy. He's a co-founder of Gallery Row and his downtown art gallery, Niche L.A. offers free film screenings on Wednesday nights. Did I mention that he's producing the play Trojan Women for Lodestone Theatre and it opens this weekend? All that and a day job working for Disney. I feel like such a slacker.

I can't even make it to his screening tonight. I'm also missing tonight's Skid Row Walk and the DLANC Outreach Center Spruce-Up. What am I doing that's so important that I'll willingly miss all these downtown events? I'm going to see Mr. Warmth himself, Don Rickles, at the Central Library. Gawd, I hope he insults me.

In the year 1000, aliens from the planet Quetzalcoatl flee their dying planet and take refuge under the Earth's surface. Lodestone Theatre Ensemble presents its mainstage production of Kenneth Cavander’s translation of Euripides’ classic play The Trojan Women, running August 4-26, 2007 at the GTC Burbank (1111-B West Olive Ave., Burbank, CA 91506) located inside George Izay Park.

In keeping with the theater’s mission to support and foster Asian Pacific American artists, the play has been cast with Asian Pacific American actors led by veterans Emily Kuroda (The Gilmore Girls) and Kelvin Han Yee (Lucky You). This is absolutely brilliant - the Milagro Theater in New York is extending the run of their stage adaption of the 1991 Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze extreme-sports blockbuster movie, Point Break. As if that weren't hilarious enough:

"...the starring role of Keanu will be selected at random from the audience each night, and will read their entire script off of cue-cards. This method manages to capture the rawness of a Keanu Reeves performance even from those who generally think themselves incapable of acting."

The show has already had sold-out extended runs in Minneapolis, Seattle and Brooklyn. Why, oh why, can't this be staged in Los Angeles?
