architecture and public art in riga

Riga is an interesting mix of gothic, baroque, medieval, art nouveau and Soviet-era architecture. Here are a few pics from yesterday's tour of Old Town and New Riga, more can be found here.

What are all the locks for? It's intriguing, but I'm sure the real story is even more intriguing!!!

couples write their names and the date of their union on the lock, attach it to the bridge and throw the key in the water. supposedly it ensures that your union will endure, otherwise you have to go into the water to retrieve your key and remove your lock from the bridge.
